REGUA, Atlantic Forest, Brazil: 10 September

Today got off to an early start with Adilei, Rachel, lodge co-ordinator Kameliya Petrova, Colin Bushell and I finding ourselves night-birding on the Onofre Cunha Trail at 3 am. Despite hearing a Black-capped Screech-Owl, 2 Tawny-browed Owl and 3 Mottled Owl, only a single Black-banded Owl decided to briefly show itself. Just before dawn we also heard a call that sounded very much like a Stygian Owl?

Back at the lodge we found a few hawkmoths and a couple of dragonflies were amongst the moths attracted to the moth light, but the garden was very quiet, with few birds coming to the feeders and only small numbers of hummingbirds present. 1 White-winged Becard and a Fawn-breasted Tanager were the most noteworthy sightings, however, a pair of Yellow-lored Tody-Flycatchers nest building and mating provided some signs of early spring.

The wetland was also very quiet for birds. A Common Potoo nesting near post 250 of the Wetland Trail was the highlight, but a pair of nest building Social Flycatchers were also notable. Insects were much more in evidence, with several butterfly and dragonfly species noted.
